Special Education Supervisor

Department: Education Leadership
Location: Springfield , MA

The Opportunity

The Special Education Supervisor works in collaboration with the Head of School and Director of Curriculum and Instruction (DCI) to provide differentiated support for all staff, with special attention to Special Education teachers. Reporting to the Head of School or his/her designee, the Special Education Supervisor will engage in feedback cycles with teachers to identify the root causes impacting student learning, emphasizing SPED-identified scholars. The Special Education Supervisor will support professional development planning and delivery to ensure Phoenix Special Education teachers are well-equipped to meet their student's academic and social-emotional needs in the classroom.

Instructional Leadership and Teacher Development Responsibilities

In addition to supporting the instructional vision of the school and ensuring school-wide academic outcomes, the focus of the Special Education Supervisor is to support the growth and development of our special education programming:

  • Structure formal and informal classroom observations, feedback and work blocks to support the growth and development of Special Education teachers

  • Utilize school-wide data to evaluate Special Education teacher support structures

  • Ensure that teachers are meeting diverse needs in their classrooms by providing resources, modeling lessons, etc.

  • Model lessons and guest teach when necessary

  • Teach a section, if necessary.

  • Support the DCI with the planning and execution of the PD calendar and Educator Institute calendar

Compliance

To align with all DESE/ADA Compliance, the Special Education Supervisor for will:

  • Lead special education programming and compliance, including facilitating IEP meetings or delegate the facilitation to the appropriate staff member and coordinate with teachers to ensure all required paperwork is complete in accordance with IEP timelines

  • Facilitate the Instructional Kid Talk process

  • Collaborate with the Scholar Success Team to identify appropriate instructional interventions

  • Communicating current situation of SpEd, needs of department, and providing big picture insight of impact of decisions on Special EducationAA

Student Support and Other Responsibilities

  • Model handbook and professionalism at all times as relates to student-teacher; when necessary, serve as student support team member

  • Support open and transparent communication between teachers and staff members in student support focused roles

  • Serve as representative for the DCI at meetings and workshops throughout the year, especially as relates to DESE mandates

  • At the beginning of the school year, and periodically throughout, work collaboratively with the Director of Special Education to identify roles and responsibilities.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 7 years’ experience teaching, with a record of successfully impacting student achievement and working successfully with students who have the greatest needs

  • Experience as an instructional coach strongly preferred

  • Experience implementing all parts of the IEP process

  • Understanding of special education regulations and laws

  • Strong pedagogical knowledge and content expertise

  • Employment is based on qualifications for the role as well as a successful background check
